While looking for an online encyclopedia to confirm that raccoons do have thumbs, I ran across The Online Encyclopedia of American Silver Marks. Puts me in mind of Rosalind Laker's novel Silver Touch, based on a real woman named Hester Bateman. Of course, when I think silver I also remember Lois McMaster Bujold's book Spirit Ring, which I truly enjoyed. The author notes on that book made me go read Benvenuto Cellini's autobiography.

The first book is romance, the second fantasy, the third historical autobiography, and all worth reading.

And some of the silver hallmarks are really neat, too.
