Jul. 4th, 2006

As I walked down the pier this morning on my way home, I looked out at all of the ships dressed in their holiday best. Bright flags rippled in the morning breeze on lines strung from foc'sle to the mast to the fantail. Here and there, a ship only flew large ensigns from the halyards--dress ship instead of full dress ship--and if they weren't in an industrial maintenance period then they're probably working their pre-underway checksheets.

It was a beautiful San Diego morning.

There's something about pretty ships. Was there, perhaps, the smell of saltwater mingling with diesel in that morning breeze? I like the scent of ships and boats, lol.

That would have been nice. Alas, all I could smell was breakfast from someone's galley.
