Reading, Busybusy, and Other Stuff

Started and finished the latest Harry Potter on Sunday. I still think Azkaban is the best of the series. This one didn't really have any overwhelming conflict to carry through the book. But it was a nice, easy
read that has probably more than satisfied the Fan-atics out there.

It's so way cool that Elizabeth Bear won the Campbell Award! I shall have to mention that to the fellow who borrowed my copy of Hammered. Good stuff!

Sidenote: The Incredibles was on in the CPO Lounge, and I realized how strange I am that I even know what a Hugo is....

So much stuff going on. Equipment issues that I will not discuss but that kept my & my folks scrambling for what seems like a long time now. Training team things and preparations for the upcoming assessment. CPO transition stuff, particularly since I'm a sponsor for one of them now--which is an honor. Tiger cruise plannign stuff, although not so much. And a few other things all coming due at once.

And the stupid cough just won't go away. Out of meds again, so it's back to Medical. I feel much better than I sound. One of the guys said I sounded like I'd been a heavy smoker for years....

But I did sleep for eight hours on Saturday night. Boy was that bliss.

In an hour or so, I shall call home and wish my girl a happy birthday. And tell her where to find her present, of course.

More on what the ship is up to. Lemme tell ya, those Harriers are loud when they're right over your head! They're also much smaller than I thought they'd be.

I had a maintenance spot-check in one of the main spaces today. (Maintenance spot-check is where I go watch a maintenance person perform a particular preventive maintenance check and make sure they know how to
validate the card, is familiar with the procedures and can follow the steps on the card.) (Main spaces are main engineering spaces, where the boilers and generators and the interesting bits that make the ship move are located.) I was quite tickled to discover that I recognized that those things over there had to be SSTGs. (Generators.) Of course it was hot, but it was much cooler in the control room, where I figured out pretty fast what all of the consoles and panels were for. Guess that requalification on my Surface Warfare is going to be pretty easy after all.

That's it for now. If you've made it this far, and have some question about shipboard life or duties or whathaveyou that I haven't answered during our long (or short) association, feel free to ask. I'll answer what I can.
