Memorial Day

In February 1942, the USS PEARY was refuelling in Darwin, Australia. As
they finished up and got underway, 242 Japanese aircraft attacked the
harbor. Two British ammunition ships exploded, as did a gasoline freighter.
Two US Army transports were torpedoed. Thirteen ships, both military and
merchant, sank and nine were damaged.

The PEARY fired at the aircraft. Her steering gear room flooded, her galley
caught fire, her magazines exploded, and her engine room was wrecked. The
crew kept fighting until it went down. Eighty of her 120 man crew went with
her.

Today, I remember them. I may not get to their memorial
today, but some time this week I shall.
