And to be more serious...the tsunami/earthquake news is horrible. I keep thinking of the woman in the bar in Thailand--the woman who was so happy it was pouring rain so that her house would have water that day--and I hope she's alive, and her family, too. Do tragedies like this touch me more because I've walked on those beaches and met those people? And if so, then what does it say about me as a person, that I value more people I've met and seen than those I haven't?

People we've met and seen are inherently more real to us that people we haven't. It's very hard to feel sympathy for abstract someones. How does one care about billions of faceless people?

So, what does it say about you? I think it says that the fact that you are touched by the fates of people you've only briefly met puts you miles ahead of most of the rest of us.
